Soldiers Can Respond to Attacks in Lebanon, Israel Announces
LebanonMon Jun 22 2026
After a pause in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, Israeli officials made it clear troops won’t back down in southern Lebanon. Israel’s defence minister said soldiers have full permission to act fast if they feel threatened. Meanwhile, Lebanon reported over twenty deaths from recent Israeli strikes, which Israel claims were retaliation for Hezbollah firing rockets first.
Even with a new truce in place, tensions haven’t cooled much. Israel insists it’s keeping troops near the border zone—about six miles deep into Lebanon—to stop attacks on northern Israeli towns. Hezbollah says it will stop firing into Israel, but only if Israeli forces leave Lebanese soil completely. That’s a tricky stand since Israel isn’t planning to pull back anytime soon.
Some global talks are coming up that could shift the balance. The United States and Iran are discussing plans to end months of conflict that have shaken the region since early this year. But whether those discussions will cool things down, or just shift them elsewhere, remains unclear.
Israel’s military actions show they’re focused on destroying what they call terrorist groups and their bases in Lebanon. At the same time, Hezbollah insists their fight is justified as self-defense. The question now is how long both sides can hold their positions without sparking another round of violence.
