Somalia and Norway Talk Economic Reforms in Mogadishu Meeting
Somalia's Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh sat down with Norway's Ambassador Siv Cathrine Moe in Mogadishu this past Friday. They talked about boosting economic ties and pushing forward financial reforms. A statement from Somalia's Ministry of Finance said the goal was to support the country's development and strengthen its financial system.
The meeting didn't produce any new deals or funding promises. But it shows Norway remains involved in Somalia's long-term economic plans. Norway has backed Somalia's debt relief efforts and helped the country leave the heavily indebted poor countries list in late 2023.
Norway's support goes beyond finance. In October 2025, Norway gave NOK 45 million to the Somalia Joint Fund's Human Rights and Gender Window. That money helps local groups with justice, accountability, and gender-focused programs.
Still, questions remain. The latest meeting had no concrete outcomes. Somalia struggles with weak tax collection, shaky institutions, and political fights. Outside help can assist, but real change needs strong leadership at home.
Past meetings show steady engagement. In August 2026, Somalia's Foreign Minister met Norway's special envoy to discuss diplomacy. In July 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama met with Norway's ambassador to deepen ties. These talks keep the partnership alive, but results stay unclear.
