Sony Gains Full Control of Peanuts

Tokyo, JapanTue Mar 03 2026
Sony Music Entertainment Japan and Sony Pictures Entertainment have secured an 80‑percent stake in the Peanuts franchise, paying $460 million to acquire the remaining shares from WildBrain. Sony Music Japan already owned 39 percent since 2018, so this deal adds another 41 percent and brings the beloved comic series under a single corporate umbrella. The transaction, announced in December 2025 after regulatory checks, means that every cartoon, movie and product featuring Charlie Brown, Snoopy and friends will now be managed by Sony. Peanuts began as daily comic strips in 1950, written by Charles M. Schulz. Over the decades it evolved into a global brand with classic specials like “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and stage shows such as “Snoopy the Musical. ”
With Sony’s new ownership, fans can expect fresh adaptations and potentially expanded merchandise lines. The move also signals Sony’s strategy to strengthen its portfolio of iconic intellectual properties, especially those that appeal across generations. While the acquisition may open doors for new creative projects, it also raises questions about how much of the original charm will be preserved. Will Sony’s corporate focus alter the quirky, understated humor that has defined Peanuts for more than 70 years? Only time will tell whether the partnership keeps the spirit intact or reshapes it for a modern audience.
