Sony Pictures Hits Mixed Results in 2025: Anime Wins, Film Losses

Tokyo, JapanFri May 08 2026
Sony Pictures Entertainment’s earnings for the year that ended March 31, 2026 show a picture of balance. Total sales reached JPY1. 499 trillion, about $9. 92 billion, essentially unchanged from the previous year. The company’s biggest draw was the anime film “Infinity Castle, ” which earned $741 million worldwide. Yet this success was countered by weaker performance from its theatrical releases. Operating income slipped 11 % to JPY104. 9 billion ($687 million). A large portion of the drop came from one‑time charges—about JPY27. 1 billion—linked to impairment losses on assets tied to Pixomondo, the visual‑effects and virtual‑production studio that Sony shut down. When those charges are removed, the core operating profit actually grew 13 % in yen terms (or 11 % in dollars), reaching roughly $858 million.
Looking ahead, Sony plans to focus on building strong franchises. Upcoming titles include “Spider‑Man: Brand New Day” and “Jumanji: Open World. ” In the March 2026 quarter, revenue rose 14 % to JPY472. 9 billion. A bright spot was the animation film “GOAT, ” an action‑comedy about a goat competing in a sport called roarball. The movie pulled $192 million globally, with $103 million domestically, after its February 13 release. Overall for the quarter, Sony’s broader business posted sales of JPY3. 036 trillion (up 8 %) and net income of JPY83. 1 billion—a 63 % decline largely due to the Pixomondo‑related charges.
