Sam Moore, one half of the iconic duo Sam & Dave, sadly left us on January 10, 2023, at the age of 89. His death was due to complications from surgery. Born in Miami, Sam began his journey in the church choir, eventually catching the eye of soul legend Sam Cooke. After witnessing Jackie Wilson's performance, Sam shifted to pop music and met Dave Prater at the King O'Hearts Club, forming the dynamic duo Sam & Dave.
Atlantic Records executives, recognizing their talent, signed them and passed them on to Stax Records. There, Isaac Hayes and David Porter produced their hit songs like "Hold On, I'm Coming" and the Grammy-winning "Soul Man. " Their music resonated with legends like Bruce Springsteen and Phil Collins. Despite their breakup in 1970, their songs like "Soul Man" became anthems, revived by movies like The Blues Brothers.
Sam's personal life had its ups and downs, including a heroin addiction chronicled in the documentary Only the Strong Survive. He recovered with the help of his wife Joyce, whom he married in 1982. Together, they navigated his sobriety and career resurgence. Sam went on to perform for multiple U. S. presidents and received the highest honor from the Recording Academy.
In his later years, Sam Moore advocated for artists' rights and was working on a gospel album before his passing. His legacy in soul music is unforgettable.
