South Africa is in a tough spot right now. The government has called it a national disaster because of really bad floods and heavy rain. At least 30 people have died in the northern parts of the country. Limpopo and Mpumalanga are the worst hit, but other areas are also struggling. The floods have destroyed thousands of homes and washed away roads and bridges. This makes it hard for people to get help. The government is now in charge of organizing the response to this crisis.
This isn't the first time South Africa has seen such heavy rains. Since late last year, Mozambique and Zimbabwe have also been hit hard. Together, these three countries have seen over 100 deaths from flooding. The Kruger National Park had to close because of the floods. Hundreds of tourists and staff had to be moved to safer areas. The damage in Limpopo province alone is estimated at around $240 million. Many houses and buildings are completely gone. Last year, over 100 people died in floods in the Eastern Cape province. In 2022, more than 400 people lost their lives in KwaZulu-Natal province. These numbers show that flooding is a big problem in South Africa.
