South African Afrikaners Find New Hope in the US
Washington DC, USAFri May 09 2025
The United States has taken a significant step by granting refugee status to 54 white Afrikaner South Africans. These individuals are expected to arrive in Washington DC soon, where they will be greeted by high-ranking government officials. This move comes at a time when the US has been under scrutiny for its refugee policies.
It is no secret that the US has had a complex history with refugee resettlement. In January, the Trump administration temporarily suspended the refugee settlement program. This decision left over 100, 000 approved refugees in limbo, having fled from countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Afghanistan.
In a surprising turn of events, February saw an executive order directing the US government to grant refugee status to Afrikaners. This group, descendants of Dutch and French colonizers, has faced discrimination in South Africa. The US government has been working to arrange their arrival, with plans for a charter flight to Dulles International Airport. This is unusual, as commercial flights are typically the norm.
The speed at which this new refugee program was established and refugee status granted is noteworthy. Prior to the Trump administration, the average time for a refugee to be resettled in the US was 18 to 24 months. This process involved thorough interviews and background checks. The US Department of State has been conducting these interviews and processing the applications, prioritizing those who have faced racial discrimination.
South Africa's foreign ministry has expressed regret over the situation, stating that the resettlement appears politically motivated. They argue that South Africa has worked hard to prevent discrimination since the end of apartheid. The country remains deeply unequal, with white people typically having 20 times the wealth of black people. The black unemployment rate is also significantly higher than that of white people.
The US Department of Health and Human Services will assist the South Africans with basic needs upon their arrival. This includes housing, household items, groceries, clothing, and other essentials. The Afrikaners will be resettled in various states across the US, some of which have family members already living there.
The situation in South Africa is complex. Affirmative action policies have helped create a black elite and middle class since the end of apartheid. However, most black South Africans still live in poverty. These policies, along with high crime rates, have led some white South Africans to feel like victims of targeted racism. It is a delicate balance, and the US's involvement adds another layer to the discussion.
