The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund is making waves in South Carolina's conservation world. They're close to hitting a $5 million mark in donations to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). The latest grant, planned for 2026, is $190, 000. This money comes from private donations, events, and promotions.
The fund started in 1981, after Harry Hampton passed away. Hampton was a big deal in conservation. He pushed for the creation of the South Carolina Wildlife Commission, which is now the SCDNR. He also fought to make Congaree Swamp a national monument, which it became. Today, it's South Carolina's only national park.
The fund's main focus is education, especially for young people. They give out scholarships to students studying wildlife, fisheries, forestry, and related fields. They also support law enforcement and journalism scholarships. Every dollar raised stays in South Carolina and goes towards programs that the SCDNR can't fund through state or federal money.
Recently, the fund donated two cargo trailers to the SCDNR's law enforcement division. These trailers are fully enclosed and will carry equipment for SCDNR functions. The outside of the trailers will have colorful photos of hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities in South Carolina. There are also QR codes that link to the Hampton Wildlife Fund's website.
The fund's executive director, BeBe Dalton Harrison, said they're proud to support the SCDNR. Board chair Alvin Taylor added that their mission is to stand alongside the SCDNR in their educational work. Former executive director Jim Goller said it's been a challenge to let people know who Hampton was and what the fund does. But they're making a difference, one dollar and one scholarship at a time.
