A group of South Korean workers, caught up in a recent immigration raid in Georgia, are set to leave the U. S. on Wednesday. The departure is scheduled for around 2:30 PM local time. This news comes from Yonhap, which cited an unnamed source.
The South Korean government has chartered a plane to bring back approximately 300 workers. These workers were detained at a site where a massive $4. 3 billion project is underway. Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution are collaborating on this venture to produce batteries for electric vehicles.
Before heading to Washington, South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun expressed his intentions. He aims to collaborate with the U. S. to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, he is seeking guarantees that Koreans returning home will be able to re-enter the U. S. without issues.
Meanwhile, former President Trump took to social media on Sunday. He mentioned that the U. S. would expedite the process for foreign companies to bring in their staff. This is under the condition that they respect U. S. immigration laws.
When asked about these comments, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reiterated Trump's message. She also noted that the U. S. government is actively working on this matter. The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Commerce are involved in addressing the issue.
The South Korean foreign ministry has not yet responded to requests for comment. This situation highlights the complexities of immigration laws and their impact on international workers.
