In a recent meeting, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol pledged to take action against North Korea's involvement in Russia's war in Ukraine. He was speaking after talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda about boosting defense ties. South Korea's intelligence agency believes that around 3, 000 North Korean troops are training in Russia, with plans to increase this number to 10, 000 by the end of the year.
Yoon sees North Korea's support for Russia as a breach of the UN charter and a threat to global security. He wants South Korea to work with international partners to counter this. This could mean providing weapons to Ukraine, which is a big change in South Korea's policy. Until now, South Korea has only sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine and avoided sending weapons to countries in conflict.
During the meeting, Yoon and Duda agreed to send more military equipment to each other. This includes a deal for South Korean K-2 tanks. Poland has been beefing up its defenses against Russia by buying tanks, howitzers, and missile launchers from South Korea.
