South Shore Drowned: A Rainy Day Like No Other
The South Shore of Massachusetts faced a massive flood on a recent Thursday. It was not just any rainy day. This was a "one in 200" weather event. That means it was a rare and extreme storm.
Heavy Rainfall and Flooding
The rain poured down hard in Boston, Quincy, Brockton, and other nearby towns. The National Weather Service had warned about possible floods that morning. They also issued a flash flood advisory for Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, and parts of Connecticut.
The rain caused big problems. Some lanes of I-93 were flooded in Milton, Canton, and Quincy. Commuters and workers across the state had a tough time getting around.
Record-Breaking Rainfall
Meteorologists measured the rain. They found that the border of Hingham and Weymouth got about 6.5 inches of rain. That is a lot! It was enough to make this storm a "one in 200" event.
Tucker Antico, a meteorologist, said this amount of rain is rare. He also said the terrain in that area makes the flooding worse. Other meteorologists, like Eric Fisher and Terry Eliasen, shared similar reports. They said six inches of rain has only a 0.5% chance of falling in a given year.
Impact on Local Communities
The rain totals varied by town. Weymouth got the most rain, with about 6.64 inches. Other towns like Randolph, Hingham, and Braintree also got a lot of rain. But places like Boston (Logan Airport) and Worcester got much less.
The rain caused big problems. It flooded roads and made it hard for people to get around.
Importance of Preparedness
This storm was a big deal. It was rare and extreme. It caused a lot of trouble for people in the South Shore. Meteorologists say it is important to be prepared for such events. They can happen anytime. And when they do, they can cause a lot of damage.
