Southeast Michigan is facing a rough ride through Wednesday evening, as winter weather continues to cause havoc on the roads. The system that brought a mix of rain, snow, and sleet to the Metro Detroit area in the morning is slowly moving out by the afternoon. However, don't expect the roads to clear up quickly.
The winter weather advisory has been extended to include Livingston, Oakland, and Macomb counties and will remain in effect until 4 p. m. Wednesday. A few flurries may linger into the late afternoon and evening, but the main concern for drivers will be the plummeting temperatures and gusty winds of around 30 miles per hour.
Expect slippery spots, especially on untreated roads, ramps, overpasses, side streets, and neighborhoods. As of 9 a. m. Wednesday, snowfall ranged from just over 1 inch in Monroe to 7 inches in Lake Orion. More snow may accumulate in the afternoon before the system moves out.
Drivers are advised to allow plenty of time to reach their destinations and ensure their cars are equipped with essentials in case of weather-related delays or accidents. Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens overnight, with single-digit wind chills forecasted for Thursday morning. This means that some roads may still be slick in certain areas.
The situation highlights the importance of being prepared for winter weather. It's crucial to have a plan in place and to stay informed about changing conditions. By taking the necessary precautions, drivers can help ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
