Denver-based Voyager Space has a new leader for its national security business: Matt Magaña, who brings a wealth of experience from the defense industry. Previously at Raytheon Intelligence & Space, Magaña joins Voyager as the executive vice president of national security. Voyager is known for its focus on space exploration and has been acquiring companies to build a comprehensive operation. One of its key projects is the Starlab commercial space station, developed with partners like Airbus and Mitsubishi, aiming to keep humans in low-Earth orbit for scientific research.
Magaña sees a chance for Voyager to make a splash in defense. He plans to use the company's unique technologies and international partnerships to support defense programs that need advanced subsystems. This includes projects like missile propulsion and advanced navigation and sensing solutions. The defense industry is under pressure to deliver affordable, reliable products, creating an opportunity for mid-tier suppliers like Voyager to offer high-value solutions.
Voyager's portfolio is impressive. Valley Tech Systems (VTS) and Space Micro, two of Voyager's subsidiaries, have numerous national security contracts. VTS specializes in advanced propulsion and signal processing systems, even working with Lockheed Martin on the Next Generation Interceptor program. Space Micro develops high-performance avionics and space subsystems that support laser communications and electro-optics.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are also on Voyager's radar for defense applications. The company recently teamed up with Palantir Technologies to explore AI-driven solutions for national security programs. Matt Kuta, Voyager's president, welcomes Magaña's appointment, believing he will drive key initiatives to shape the future of national security and secure space operations.
