Space Force: Are We Getting There?

Back in 2019, President Trump folded the Space Force into the Department of the Air Force. The idea was to have it grow with Air Force support until it could stand on its own. But is this plan working out? Some say it's just fine. The Air Force has helped a lot. But others think it's time for Space Force to have its own department and break free from Air Force rules.
The Space Force needs its own ideas and culture, says Douglas Loverro. It's not about fighting with the Air Force. It's about understanding that space isn't like the air. You need different strategies for space battles.
President Trump once talked about reducing government bloat. So, creating a new department for Space Force might clash with that idea. But here's where it gets interesting. Trump also had a plan for a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). If DOGE cuts some waste and finds funds, Space Force could get its independence without adding to bureaucracy.
The world in space is getting tense. Other countries are developing ways to mess with our satellites. Having a dedicated Space Force might help us deal with these space threats better.
Some experts worry that Space Force is losing out by being under the Air Force. They think it needs its own leaders to make space a top priority. Todd Harrison from the American Enterprise Institute says Space Force should talk directly to Congress and the public, not through the Air Force. Peter Garretson from the American Foreign Policy Council goes further. He thinks the Air Force is holding Space Force back.
The second Trump presidency might bring a fresh look at this issue. Maybe this time, the stars will align for an independent Space Force.
