SpaceX's Astronaut Health Check: A Brief Stay in Hospital
Florida, USASun Oct 27 2024
Yesterday's morning splashdown for NASA's Crew 8 astronauts brought a mix of excitement and concern. Three American astronauts—Jeanette Epps, Michael Barratt, and Matthew Dominick—along with Russian cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin, ended their 232-day space journey aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon. While all four made it back safely, one of the NASA astronauts was checked into a Florida hospital.
Originally planned to return in August, weather and Boeing Starliner delays pushed their landing to October. The crew faced a two-month extension due to hurricanes and critical tests for Boeing's spaceship. NASA's priority was keeping a constant US presence in space, even if it meant extending Crew 8's stay on the International Space Station (ISS).
Following the splashdown, all crew members were whisked off to a nearby hospital. News eventually surfaced that one astronaut stayed overnight for observation. The reason? Precautions after a long space stint. Today, NASA shared good news: the astronaut is out of the hospital, back at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, and doing well.
Space travel isn't easy. Astronauts face health challenges even after landing. For instance, Crew 3's Raja Chari reported spine issues, and Crew 5's Josh Cassada detailed strange visual effects during reentry. These experiences highlight the need for thorough post-flight care.
