SpaceX's Next Crew Launch: What You Need to Know
NASA's Kennedy Space Center, USASun Mar 09 2025
SpaceX's Crew Dragon Endurance has arrived at the launch site, ready for its next mission to the International Space Station (ISS). This spacecraft has already completed three successful missions: Crew-3, Crew-5, and Crew-7. It will now embark on Crew-10, scheduled to launch on March 12, 2025.
The mission will carry four astronauts: NASA's Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA's Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos' Kirill Peskov. They will spend about six months on the ISS, relieving the current Crew-9 astronauts. This handover is crucial for maintaining the station's operations and ensuring a smooth transition of responsibilities.
The journey to the ISS will take approximately 14 hours. The docking is expected to occur around 10 a. m. EDT on March 13, 2025. This will mark the beginning of the end for the current Crew-9 astronauts, who have been on the ISS since September 2024. Two of these astronauts, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, arrived earlier than their crewmates due to issues with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. This unexpected event extended their mission from 10 days to nearly ten months.
The Crew-9 astronauts will return to Earth aboard the Crew Dragon Freedom, which has been docked at the ISS since late September 2024. This spacecraft will serve as their ride home, ensuring a safe return after their extended stay.
The Crew-10 mission was initially planned to use a new Crew Dragon spacecraft. However, delays and political pressure led to a change in plans. The mission was rescheduled to "no earlier than late March" to allow for necessary maintenance. This decision was influenced by the need to bring home the "stranded" Starliner astronauts as soon as possible.
The Crew Dragon Endurance was chosen for this mission because it was ready to fly sooner. This spacecraft has already proven its reliability through previous missions, making it a suitable choice for Crew-10. The spacecraft has now reached SpaceX's hangar at Launch Complex-39A, where it will undergo final checkouts before rolling out to the launch pad.
The launch of Crew-10 is scheduled for 7:48 p. m. EDT on March 12, 2025. The event will be livestreamed on Space. com and NASA's NASA+ streaming service. Coverage will begin at 3:45 p. m. EDT on March 12, with docking coverage starting the next day at 8:15 a. m. EDT. The hatch is expected to open around 11:45 a. m. EDT, marking the official start of the new crew's mission.
This mission highlights the importance of flexibility and adaptability in space exploration. The ability to switch spacecraft and adjust launch dates ensures that missions can proceed safely and efficiently. It also underscores the collaborative efforts of international space agencies in maintaining the ISS and advancing space research.
The upcoming launch of Crew-10 is a significant event in space exploration. It demonstrates the ongoing commitment to space research and the continuous efforts to push the boundaries of human spaceflight. As the Crew Dragon Endurance prepares for its next mission, it carries with it the hopes and aspirations of scientists, engineers, and space enthusiasts around the world.
