SpaceX's Texas Expansion: Starbase City on the Horizon

SpaceX is pushing forward with plans to transform a Texas area into a new city called Starbase. This move comes after a local county approved an election that will let nearby residents decide if they want to establish Starbase as a municipality. The proposed city is located near Boca Chica Beach, close to the U. S. -Mexico border, and is a key site for SpaceX's Starship development and testing. The area known as Starbase has seen significant growth since SpaceX first started working there in 2014. Today, it's a bustling hub with over 3, 400 full-time employees and contractors. The proposed city limits include around 250 land lots, with SpaceX owning nearly all of them. The community is also home to over 100 children, highlighting the need for local amenities. The push for incorporation gained momentum in December 2024, when more than 70 residents signed a petition. Most of the signers are SpaceX employees, showing strong support within the community. However, the idea of turning Starbase into a city isn't without controversy. Environmental advocates have raised concerns about the potential impact of increased development. In December 2024, community organizations sued Texas, alleging that wastewater from SpaceX launchpads was contaminating nearby wetlands. SpaceX, on the other hand, has stated that they use clean water for their launchpads and that testing found negligible traces of contaminants. If the election passes, Starbase could become the newest town in Cameron County since Los Indios in 1995.
