This could be anything from becoming much angrier or more withdrawn suddenly. For some, it might mean they start acting out more, while for others, they might pull away from friends and spend lots of time online.Former FBI special agent Mary Ellen O’Toole, who has studied school shootings for over 20 years, points out that students are often the first to spot these changes. She explains that school shooters often give hints about their plans before they act. This could be due to excitement or as a cry for help. School safety consultant Melissa Reeves adds that broad statements of hostility, like "I hate everybody, " are also red flags. Both experts agree that if you see these signs, it’s important to speak up and tell a trusted adult.
