Spring rain forces early end to track invitational
Tallmadge, USAFri May 01 2026
A sudden downpour turned the Tallmadge Invitational track meet into a one-and-done event on April 24. The meet was supposed to give local high school athletes a chance to compete, but rainwater soaked the track and stands, forcing organizers to call it quits after just one event. The meet didn’t even last long enough for most teams to set up their gear.
Athletic directors usually plan for bad weather, but this cancellation might be permanent. The meet’s director said there are no plans to reschedule, leaving teams without their only chance to test their skills against rivals this spring. Some athletes had already traveled and warmed up, only to watch their events disappear in minutes.
The rain didn’t just delay things—it erased them. Shotput, long jump, and relay races were all wiped out before they could start. Norton High’s senior Chase Lambert had practiced all season for his shotput throw, but his last chance to compete vanished in the drizzle. Revere High’s freshman Anna Bockstoce had just begun her long jump attempts when the meet was stopped.
Even the relays, usually the most reliable events, couldn’t escape the weather. Revere High’s girls 4×800-meter team was in the middle of their race when officials decided to end the meet. St. Vincent-St. Mary’s junior Caleb Parish started his leg of the boys 4×800-meter relay just as the skies opened up, but his team never got to finish.
Outdoor track meets rely on good weather, and this one proved why. A single storm can ruin months of training in an instant. For young athletes who dream of breaking records or earning medals, one canceled meet can feel like a lost season.
