Stafford's Future: Rams Open Door for Trade Talks
Sun Feb 23 2025
The Los Angeles Rams are making it easier for other teams to find out what it would take to get Matthew Stafford. The Rams have given Stafford and his agent the green light to chat with other NFL teams about his value. This move is all about figuring out how much Stafford is worth in the market.
Stafford, who is 37 years old, hasn't officially asked to be traded. But he wants a new contract, and this step will help both the Rams and Stafford figure out his market value. Stafford is set to have a $49. 6 million salary cap hit for 2025, but the Rams could save $27 million if they trade him after June 1 or $23 million if they cut him after that date.
The New York Giants are one of the teams interested in Stafford. After a rough 3-14 season, the Giants kept their general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. They don't have any quarterbacks under contract for next season, and they've been linked to Stafford recently. The Giants have the No. 3 overall pick in the April draft, but they might need to trade up to get one of the top two rated quarterbacks, Cam Ward of Miami or Shedeur Sanders of Colorado.
The Rams might also be considering other options. They could potentially sign 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, who was informed by the Jets that he won't be returning. Rodgers had a tough season with the Jets, throwing for 3, 897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 17 starts. The Jets finished 5-12 and missed the playoffs for the 14th straight year.
Stafford has had a solid career. He played his first 12 seasons with the Lions before being traded to the Rams in 2021. In 2024, he started 16 games for the Rams, throwing for 3, 762 yards with 20 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a passer rating of 93. 7. He won a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2022.
The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine is coming up soon, starting Thursday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. This event is crucial for evaluating college football players and determining their potential in the NFL. It's a big deal for teams looking to draft new talent and for players aiming to showcase their skills.
