The policies are cruel and unjust. Yet, immigrants continue to have faith in the justice system, even when that faith is often betrayed. Volunteers are stepping up to support these immigrants. Through projects like FAITH, they accompany people to immigration court. They cannot stop the arrests, but they can show support and comfort to those left behind. This presence sends a clear message: San Diegans care about immigrants and their rights. There are many ways to help. You can join neighborhood patrols, deliver groceries to those afraid to leave their homes, or simply offer a warm greeting. Every act of kindness makes a difference.One woman, the head of a large, mixed-status family, wants nothing more than to abide by the law. But the fear of ICE fills her with dread. Her husband's job has been cut back, and she struggles to feed her family. Another friend, seeking legal status, has put his efforts on hold. He fears being deported from the courtroom and finds it safer to stay in the shadows. California is known for its welcoming spirit. With nearly 11 million immigrants, the state benefits greatly from their contributions. From high-tech to agriculture, immigrants play a vital role in the state's economic growth and innovation. Political leaders must come together to enact genuine immigration reform. But until then, it is up to each of us to show compassion. During this holiday season, let us remember the journey of Mary and Joseph, desperate refugees seeking a safe place. Let us stand with our migrant brothers and sisters and proclaim liberty to captives and good news to the poor.
