Stapling Showdown: Robotic vs Laparoscopic in Bariatric Surgery
Sun Feb 09 2025
Having a tool that promises to make your job faster and more cost-effective—but it doesn't. Doctors are performing a certain type of weight-loss surgery using robots. This procedure is known as a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). During this surgery, doctors use a robotic system called Da Vinci Xi to create and connect parts of the digestive system.
Each time a doctor attaches an important part, they use staples. The two main types of staplers used are laparoscopic and robotic. In
the past, a study looked into the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of these staplers. During this study, eighty-six patients were involved. Half of the patients had their surgeries performed with robotic staples. The other half had laparoscopic staples. Doctors performed the surgeries using the Da Vinci Xi
robotic system. They analyzed how long the procedures took, the number of tools used, the cost of the tools, and any issues that arose afterward. Doctors found that laparoscopic staplers made the entire procedure faster. The Doctors recorded thatthe procedure took 23% less time with the laparoscopic staplers. Doctors were also able to change tools less often.
The cost of the tools was higher with the robotic staplers, but Doctors found there wasno difference in the length of recovery patients needed.
There were no complications from using either type of stapler.
Critics will say that there is noclear winner based on safety, however, based on the results and facts shown above.
