State Lawsuit Targets Planned Immigration Detention Center

New Jersey, USASat Mar 21 2026
New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against the federal government, challenging the plan to turn an empty warehouse into a large immigration detention center. The legal action comes after Maryland took similar steps last month to stop a comparable project in its borders. Governor Mikie Sherrill and Attorney General Jennifer Davenport argue that the federal proposal ignores crucial state concerns. They point to issues with water, sewage and public safety that could affect residents if the facility opens. The state also questions whether the chosen site is suitable for holding up to 1, 500 detainees. Officials worry that the warehouse’s location could harm the local environment and question its appropriateness for such a use. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The lawsuit reflects broader opposition to the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration strategy. In its first year, the administration increased arrests and deportations, and in its second year it plans to spend more than $38 billion on new detention centers. This funding would raise the total capacity of ICE facilities to 92, 600 beds. The legal battle underscores a clash between state and federal priorities over how to manage immigration enforcement facilities. It also highlights the ongoing debate about the best ways to balance security, public health and community impact.
