Staten Island Hospital Adds Robot‑Assisted Knee Surgery

Staten Island, New York, USAThu May 28 2026
The only place on Staten Island that now uses a robot to help with knee replacements is Northwell Staten Island University Hospital, located in Ocean Breeze. The new system comes from Smith+Nephew and is called the CORI Surgical System. It works by letting doctors build a 3‑D picture of a patient’s knee while the operation is happening, instead of depending on pictures taken before surgery. During a ribbon‑cutting ceremony at the Prince’s Bay campus, hospital leaders said this move shows they are looking ahead to better care for the community. One senior official explained that the technology is not just a gadget, but an investment in future treatment options. The robot’s software lets surgeons tailor the operation to each person’s unique shape, and it cuts out the need for X‑ray or CT scans before surgery. While the machine works, doctors can also test and adjust how tight the knee ligaments feel in real time.
An interim chair of orthopedics noted that earlier knee replacements often required long stays in the hospital. Today, many patients can leave home the same day. Adding robotic assistance is seen as a big step toward faster recoveries and higher quality results. So far, three patients have had the procedure done by two surgeons: Yevgeniy Korshunov and Jules David Hip‑Flores. They said the robot helps place implants more precisely and opens new possibilities for studying outcomes to make future surgeries even better. Experts expect the number of knee replacements in America to rise as people stay active longer, so having advanced tools like this robot could become increasingly important.
