More than a dozen states and the District of Columbia filed lawsuits against TikTok this week. They claim TikTok’s design makes its platform addictive for kids, causing mental health issues. The lawsuits target TikTok’s algorithm and features like endless scrolling, push notifications, and face filters. They also allege TikTok operates an unlicensed virtual economy through its TikTok Coins and live streaming gift system. District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb stated TikTok profits by keeping users on the platform, which leads to adverse mental health impacts.
While TikTok restricts some content for users under 18, states argue kids can easily bypass these restrictions. This isn’t the first time states have sued TikTok or other tech companies over youth-related issues. Similar lawsuits have been filed in recent years, mirroring past coordinated efforts against tobacco and pharmaceutical industries.
