The Pittsburgh Steelers have a history of hiring unknown coaches who turn out to be legends. Fans expected the same this time. Instead, they got Mike McCarthy, a coach with a lot of experience but not much recent success.
McCarthy has been a head coach for 18 years. He has been fired more times than he has appeared in the Super Bowl. His playoff record is not great either. Steelers fans are hoping he can bring them their first playoff win since 2016 and their first Super Bowl win since 2008.
The Steelers did not interview other candidates like Nate Scheelhaase or Chris Shula before hiring McCarthy. This has upset some fans. It seems like other teams were not interested in McCarthy either. Only the Titans and Giants interviewed him.
In the past, when John Harbaugh was available, many teams wanted to hire him. The Giants even changed their football operation to get him. But McCarthy did not have that kind of buzz. After he was fired by the Packers, no other teams wanted to hire him.
Steelers fans are proud of their team. They expect the best coaches to want to play for them. But McCarthy's resume is similar to Harbaugh's. Harbaugh had more teams interested in him. This makes fans wonder why the Steelers did not try to hire Harbaugh instead.
If McCarthy's first year with the Steelers starts off badly, fans might start chanting for him to be fired. But there is a bright side. McCarthy had three straight 12-5 seasons in Dallas. The Steelers have not had a season that good since 2020. If McCarthy can bring that kind of success to Pittsburgh, fans might start to warm up to him.
