Steelers' New QB Shines: Wilson's Debut Leads to Big Win
Pittsburgh, USAMon Oct 21 2024
Pittsburgh Steelers fans got a treat on Sunday night when Russell Wilson made his debut, throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-15 victory over the New York Jets. This impressive performance set a new record for the most passing yards by a Steelers quarterback in their first game with the team. The Steelers now have a 5-2 record, while the Jets slipped to 2-5.
Wilson had been sidelined for the first six games due to a calf injury he picked up during a conditioning test just before training camp. He then aggravated it on September 4. During his absence, backup Justin Fields filled in, winning four out of six games but averaging only 184. 3 passing yards per game.
In Sunday's game, Wilson completed 16 out of 29 passes for a rating of 109. 0. The Steelers racked up a total of 409 yards. George Pickens caught five passes for 111 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown. Van Jefferson, whose dad is the receivers coach for the Jets, also scored with a 4-yard reception.
The Steelers' 37 points were their highest score of the season. Najee Harris sealed the deal with a 10-yard touchdown run with just 26 seconds left. Harris ran for 102 yards on 21 carries.
The Jets led 15-6 with 5:29 left in the first half but didn't score again. They had three drives in the second half end at the Pittsburgh 49, 17, and 25 due to a punt, a blocked field goal, and failing to convert on fourth down.
Aaron Rodgers, the Jets' quarterback, threw two interceptions, both picked off by cornerback Beanie Bishop. The Steelers turned these into touchdowns. Rodgers completed 24 out of 39 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown.
The Jets made a big move by trading for receiver Davante Adams, but his debut was quiet with just three catches for 30 yards. Jets running back Breece Hall had 12 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown, plus six receptions for 103 yards.
