Stomach Bug Alert: Norovirus is Back, and It's on the Rise!
USASun Dec 29 2024
You know those festive winter gatherings? Well, they might come with an unwanted guest this year – the norovirus. The U. S. has seen a spike in its outbreaks, especially in places where people are close, like schools and cruise ships. In the week ending Dec. 5, the count was at 91 outbreaks. That's not all, it's been growing since November, with up to 69 outbreaks reported then. So, what's this norovirus all about? It's the number one cause of foodborne illnesses in the U. S. , with symptoms like sudden vomiting and diarrhea. You might think a little bit won't hurt, but it only takes 10 viral particles to make someone sick! And guess what? Outbreaks peak between November and April.
Norovirus can sneak into your body through contaminated food, water, or even surfaces. It loves to spread easily and can make you sick within a day or two after exposure. The good news is, most people start feeling better within one to three days. But sadly, it still causes many hospital visits and deaths, especially among older adults and young kids. Tea, coffee, and alcohol are a no-no when you're sick, as the best remedy is staying hydrated with water and other liquids.
Everyone is at risk, but young children, older folks, and those with weak immune systems are the most vulnerable. Dehydration is the big concern, so look out for signs like less urine, dry mouth, and dizziness. If any of that happens, it's time to see a doctor.
The best shield against norovirus? Good ol' handwashing with soap and warm water for twenty seconds, especially before meals.
