A massive storm is heading towards Los Angeles. The National Weather Service has warned that this storm could bring heavy rain, leading to significant flooding, especially in areas recently affected by fires. The concern is highest for places like the Eaton and Palisades burn areas. Forecasters have issued a flash flood watch for Thursday afternoon through late Thursday night. This means residents should be ready for potential flooding and debris flows.
The storm is expected to bring lots of rain, with up to half an inch possible on Wednesday. But the real danger comes on Thursday, when rainfall could reach up to 1 inch per hour. The weather service also warns about thunderstorms, which could bring even more rain and strong winds. High elevations might see several feet of snow.
The storm will start to ease on Friday, but not before bringing 1 to 2 inches of rain across the region, with more rain possible in the foothills. Temperatures will stay in the 50s, which is a bit cooler than usual.
Some residents are worried about the debris left by recent fires. A protest was held against the Environmental Protection Agency's plan to use a Will Rogers State Beach parking lot for storing and processing hazardous materials from the Palisades Fire. Last month, there were also protests about using the historic Topanga Ranch Motel site for similar purposes. This is where the Topanga Creek flows.
The storm has already caused issues. A smaller storm last week led to mudslides on Topanga Canyon and PCH, shutting down the road in both directions between the Sweetwater Canyon Road and Chautauqua Boulevard. Topanga Canyon is also closed between Grand View Drive and PCH. Caltrans is working to clear the debris, but the road remains closed until further notice. Residents are worried about the cleanup and storage of debris from the fires.
There's a chance that the storm could make these problems worse. People living near recent burn areas need to be extra careful and stay updated on the weather. The storm will bring a lot of rain, and the threat of flooding and debris flows is real. If you're in a burn area, be ready to take action.
