Storm Fury: Big Hail and Wedge Tornado Hit Illinois
Lake Village, Illinois, USAMon Mar 23 2026
A powerful tornado struck Lake Village, Illinois on March 10, killing a couple and causing major damage. The National Weather Service named it an EF‑3 event, but the storm’s most striking feature was its gigantic hail. The largest stone measured eight inches across – a size unheard of for early‑season storms in this region. Other hailstones averaged six to seven inches, and the agency plans to recognize the event as a record.
The tornado was described as a “wedge” storm, a wide‑angled type often linked to the strongest tornadoes. Inside this big cell, smaller cells can produce their own damage and even microbursts, making the storm harder to predict.
A meteorologist from the Romeoville office gave a talk at Indiana University Northwest, urging people to pay attention to radar colors and numbers rather than just weather jargon. He explained that an “enhanced” probability isn’t necessarily worse than a “moderate” one, and that the numbers 1/5 through 5/5 should guide decisions. He also recommended having a battery‑powered weather radio and enabling Weather Emergency Alerts on phones, since power outages can happen during severe storms.
Special advice was given to those living in mobile or prefab homes: move to a safer location if possible, and avoid relying solely on local sirens because their activation criteria differ. For people stuck outside, he warned against seeking the lowest point, as these spots can flood quickly and cause drownings.
The presentation was part of a series organized by the Lake County Homeland Security and Emergency Management agency, which highlighted how storms are becoming more intense. The agency’s director emphasized the need to learn from past events and help vulnerable communities prepare better for future weather extremes.
