A big weather change is coming to the West. A series of Pacific storms will bring a lot of snow, strong winds and a risk of fires to New Mexico next week. The storms are a sharp change from the long dry period that has left California, Utah and Colorado with low snowpacks. Those states worry about water supplies for spring.
The National Weather Service says the worst weather will arrive on Tuesday. At least seven states could see winter‑type conditions with a 60 % chance or higher. In northern New Mexico, warnings are already in place for a weekend storm that could drop up to nine inches of snow at high elevations. Those warnings will end early Saturday morning.
The Albuquerque office is watching for a “triple threat” in the middle of next week. Heavy snow will hit the mountains, while strong winds could blow east of the central range. In addition, drier and warmer conditions on the Eastern Plains might create fire‑weather danger. The state’s normal wildfire season runs from May to June, but climate change is making fires possible all year. Most wildfires start because of human activity.
The storms will bring rain to much of the area Friday and Saturday, with light snow in the northern mountains. Confidence is growing that next week will bring stronger winds, higher fire danger and more mountain snow. Meteorologists are sure about the wind but not as certain about exact snowfall amounts or how much fire risk will develop. The current winter warnings are expected to cause only minor travel problems, mainly above 8, 500 feet on mountain passes such as U. S. Highways 64 and 84.
New Mexico residents should prepare for slick roads, reduced visibility and the possibility of fires. Keeping a watchful eye on weather updates will help people stay safe during this stormy week.
