Storm Watch: Hail and Wind Threat Looms Over Mississippi
Mississippi, USAWed Jun 24 2026
The National Weather Service has issued a warning for much of the state, labeling the situation as a Marginal Risk. This means that isolated severe storms could develop across northern and central Mississippi, including the Pine Belt around Hattiesburg and Laurel. The storms are expected to bring hail up to a quarter‑inch in size and winds that could reach 60 miles per hour. While the main threat is during daylight hours, officials caution that it may stretch into the evening.
Temperatures are climbing fast this summer. On Wednesday, highs will reach around 89 degrees with a heat index that could hit 100. Wind speeds are expected to shift westward at about five miles per hour in the afternoon, but remain calm overnight. By Thursday and Friday the weather will clear up, with sunny skies and temperatures peaking near 94 degrees. The pattern should bring relief after the storm window closes.
Flood risk is also a concern near Jackson. Heavy rains earlier this week pushed the Pearl River past its flood stage, reaching 29. 7 feet on the Jackson gauge and expected to crest at 30 feet by evening. While this level is above flood stage, the National Water Prediction Service says structures should not be affected at that height. Residents are advised to stay alert for any changes in river levels.
Hattiesburg weather mirrors the state outlook. Showers and thunderstorms are likely from mid‑afternoon to early evening, with rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch possible. The heat index could climb to 101 degrees, so staying hydrated is crucial. After the storm, the area will enjoy mostly sunny weather with temperatures in the low 90s.
Overall, the forecast suggests a brief period of severe weather followed by warm, clear days. People should prepare for high winds and hail, monitor river levels if near water bodies, and keep an eye on the heat index to avoid overheating. By staying informed and cautious, residents can navigate this weather cycle safely.
