Stormy Days Ahead: Massachusetts Braces for Rain and Wind
Massachusetts, Boston, USAFri May 09 2025
Weather watchers in Massachusetts are on high alert. A mix of weather factors is brewing a stormy cocktail for the region. A slow-moving weather front, combined with sunshine and a sea breeze, is setting the stage for pop-up storms or showers from Thursday afternoon through the evening.
Severe thunderstorms and flash floods are possible in central and western parts of the state. Residents should stay informed about weather alerts in their specific areas. If you are planning to be outdoors, keep an eye on the sky. The weather could bring gusty winds, heavy rain, or lightning.
Temperatures have peaked for the day and are dropping to the low 50s along the coast by Thursday evening. Overnight lows will dip into the 40s and 50s as heavy rainfall moves in. An area of low pressure is strengthening from the Midwest, pulling in moisture from the Mid-Atlantic. This system will track along the eastern coastline from Friday through Saturday.
Friday is expected to be a challenging day with windswept rain and potential flooding. High temperatures will remain in the 40s to low 50s. Morning showers will be light and scattered, increasing by afternoon. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated Friday evening and night.
Wind speeds will pick up from the southeast to east, with gusts reaching 20-30 mph. By Saturday morning to afternoon, the wind will briefly calm as the low-pressure center moves over to the Gulf of Maine. The rain will temporarily break apart, with some showers returning in the evening.
Northern New England will experience a soggy day on Saturday, while southern New England might see some breaks in the rain and spots of sun later in the day. Wind gusts will shift to the northwest by evening. Despite the weather, highs will still reach the mid-60s.
Mother’s Day on Sunday is shaping up to be beautiful. High pressure from the northwest will bring sunshine and temperatures around 70 degrees, with a chance for a sea breeze. The dry and sunny weather will continue into Monday and Tuesday, with highs approaching 80 inland and 70 at the shore, accompanied by daily afternoon sea breezes.
The next rain chance is expected to return by the end of the week, specifically Thursday through Friday, with drying conditions forecasted for the following weekend. Stay tuned for updates on the forecast.
