Stormy Morning in Texas: Power Outages and School Delays
Dallas, Texas, USATue Mar 04 2025
In the early hours of Tuesday, a fierce storm swept through North Texas, causing significant disruption. The storm was intense, with wind gusts reaching speeds of 60 to 75 miles per hour and heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service issued a thunderstorm warning and tornado watch, alerting residents to the severe conditions.
The impact was immediate and widespread. By 6 a. m. , over 300, 000 people were without power. The situation was particularly dire in Dallas County, where 105, 000 customers were affected. Two hours later, more than 200, 000 people were still in the dark. The power company, Oncor, warned that repairs would be slow due to the strong winds expected throughout the day.
The storm caused significant damage across the entire Metroplex. Schools were not spared from the chaos. Several districts reported delays in bus schedules. In Irving, de Zavala Middle School had to delay its opening until 10 a. m. due to downed power lines and a nearby gas leak. In Plano, the roof of Plano West Senior High School was partially torn off by the strong winds.
Transportation was also heavily impacted. The Federal Aviation Administration ordered a ground stop at DFW International Airport until 6:30 a. m. This led to significant delays and cancellations. By 9 a. m. , nearly 250 flights were canceled, and about 300 were delayed. At Dallas Love Field, the situation was similar, with 68 flights delayed and 63 canceled.
Traffic on the roads was equally chaotic. An 18-wheeler overturned on the northbound lanes of Interstate 35E, blocking all lanes and causing major delays. The Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras captured the incident, highlighting the severity of the storm's impact.
The storm also caused significant damage to buildings. In Far North Dallas, six buildings in an apartment complex on Marsh Lane suffered "significant roof damage" when their chimneys partially or completely blew over. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and evacuation was not necessary.
The storm's aftermath left many wondering about the resilience of infrastructure in the face of such severe weather. While the immediate focus was on restoring power and clearing roads, the event underscored the need for better preparedness and infrastructure that can withstand such extreme conditions. As the day progressed, the focus shifted to recovery and repair, with utility crews working tirelessly to restore normalcy.
