In the wee hours of Sunday, severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc across parts of Oklahoma, resulting in at least six people getting injured and numerous structures damaged. The storms brought strong winds, heavy rain, and even tornadoes, causing power outages and road closures. The Oklahoma City Police Department reported that the injured were taken to the hospital, and none of their injuries were life-threatening. The storms didn't just damage homes and buildings; they also took down power lines, trees, and traffic signals. News footage from KOCO showed the aftermath: overturned cars, houses ripped apart, and debris scattered everywhere. The National Weather Service issued warnings for the area, advising folks not to let their guard down as more thunderstorms were expected. About 95, 000 customers were without power on Sunday morning. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management was keeping a close eye on the situation, and the weather service warned about potential severe weather throughout the day.
Interstate 35 near Forest Park had to close most of its northbound lanes due to flooding. The Oklahoma City Fire Department dealt with several vehicles that got flooded because of the heavy rain. Around 1:20 a. m. , the weather service alerted everyone about a severe thunderstorm with a tornado moving towards Midwest City and Tinker Air Force Base. This prompted the University of Oklahoma in Norman to send out a shelter-in-place warning to students and staff. Nighttime tornadoes are known to be more dangerous than daytime ones because people might be asleep and unaware of the danger. With this year being particularly active for tornadoes in the US, there's extra concern. Spring and summer fire up most thunderstorms, but a second wave hits in fall and winter when cold and warm air masses clash.
