Stormy Winds Threaten Fires in Central Montana
Montana, USATue Mar 24 2026
A warning has been issued for Wednesday, from noon to 9 p. m. local time, by the National Weather Service office in Billings. The alert says conditions will be ideal for wildfires: low moisture, warm air and strong gusts. A cold front is expected to arrive from the north in the afternoon, which will change wind direction and could spark new fires.
The warning covers a large area that includes Golden Valley, Musselshell, Sheridan and several counties in southern Montana such as Big Horn, Carbon, Park, Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Yellowstone. Wind speeds will reach 15–25 mph on average, with gusts up to 45 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 15 %, and in Sheridan County it could fall to just 8 %. Temperatures may climb to about 82 °F. The front will shift the winds toward the north‑northeast between 3 and 9 p. m. , while only light showers are expected, so the chance of heavy rain is small.
Because of these conditions, fires can behave unpredictably and spread quickly, especially where dry grasses are present. Residents should avoid any outdoor burning or activities that could start a fire, and they should secure loose objects that could be carried by the wind. Checking local fire restrictions and staying updated on weather. gov or a local news site is essential. If conditions worsen, be ready to leave the area.
