Streaming Giants Up Their Sports Game

This: Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, two big names in the streaming world but newcomers in the TV industry, are making waves in the sports-content scene. According to Luminate, these platforms have been boosting their original sports programming over the past four years. Netflix alone now makes up over a quarter of the shows about specific sports, teams, and famous athletes, while Amazon Prime Video follows with nearly one-fifth.
What's interesting is that these stats don't include ESPN+ or Fox Sports 1. Luminate, which is part of PMC and Variety’s parent company, tracks original content on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime. After these two, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and NBCUniversal’s Peacock come in with 11. 5% and 10. 3%, respectively. Disney+ stands at 5. 2%, but they’ve recently opened up more ESPN+ content for their subscribers.
The sports programs you’ll find on these platforms are often biographical, documentary, historical, or talk shows. They range from “Game Theory with Bomani Jones” on Max to “NFL Tailgate Takedown” on Discovery+. Soccer and football leads the pack in terms of sports covered, followed by multi-sport, basketball, and racing.
