Streaming Service Max Removes The West Wing
Los Angeles, USAWed Jan 08 2025
Max, the streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery, has proven that nothing lasts forever. Even popular shows like The West Wing, which aired from 1999 to 2006, are not safe from being removed. This drama, created by Aaron Sorkin, was a huge hit and won 26 Emmy Awards. It was known for its unique style, like the “walk-and-talk, ” where characters have long conversations while walking. This technique can be seen in shows like Game of Thrones.
But in 2023, The West Wing was unexpectedly removed from Max. There was no warning, and now fans have to buy the digital or Blu-Ray versions if they want to watch it. This removal is part of Max's cost-cutting measures. It's a harsh reminder that no show is safe from digital oblivion.
Another example of this is the show Made for Love, starring Cristin Milioti. After it was removed from Max, it became completely unavailable. This can have ripple effects. For instance, fans of Milioti's work in The Penguin might want to watch Made for Love, but they can't.
Fans of streaming services should learn from this. Nothing is permanent. In the past, shows would at least get reruns or physical releases. Now, streaming services can remove shows forever, even if it's not what fans want.
