The spring season in Fayetteville is heating up after the winter basketball championships wrapped up. Local high schools have seen standout performances that now set the stage for this week’s “Athlete of the Week” nominees.
In baseball, a dramatic 11‑strikeout no‑hitter drew attention and several track & field athletes claimed top spots at recent meets.
Nineteen athletes are up for the honor, and voters will have until Thursday 6 p. m. to decide. Those who nominate a player can send a headshot to the designated email for recognition.
Key performers include Jaidiah Blake, who scored 21 points and grabbed ten rebounds in a tough state title loss; Nicholas Carey topped the triple jump with 43‑11. 00 at Tri‑County; and Eli Corney delivered a strong game on the mound, striking out six and contributing offensively.
From Gray’s Creek, freshman Corey Cox struck eight batters in a win over Scotland, while senior Layla Fox dominated both discus and shot put.
Cape Fear’s Zion George cleared six feet in the high jump, and Brandon Patton leapt 21 feet, 2. 5 inches to win the long jump.
On the baseball front, Jacob Moore’s no‑hitter and nine strikeouts earned him a spot; Stephen Mikkelson homered while driving in four runs; and Ryan Rogers, also a freshman, posted nine strikeouts against Northwood Temple.
Track stars such as Jada Cromartie and Ashanti Mensah secured first places in the 200‑meter dash and girls’ 400‑meter dash, respectively.
The golf medalist from Terry Sanford, Walker Worth, finished with a 66 in the Tri‑County match.
This week’s nominees showcase a mix of skill, determination, and versatility across sports, highlighting the talent thriving in Fayetteville’s high‑school community.
