A young woman from Honduras is stuck far from her family because of a mistake by U. S. immigration officials.
She was a student at Babson College and had been traveling to Texas for Thanksgiving.
At the airport she was stopped and sent back to Honduras, even though a judge had said this would be wrong.
The judge gave the government until Friday to fix the error.
He asked that a visa be issued so she could come back.
The Justice Department said the woman is “inadmissible” and will not let her return.
Immigration officials say they can’t help because she was removed under a court order that says she must leave.
They say the removal was legal and follows U. S. law.
The judge, who was chosen by a former Democratic president, could order the government to comply or face civil contempt.
The student’s lawyer says they will keep fighting in court until she comes back.
She claims she did not know she had to leave the country.
Her family is waiting for her in Honduras.
Last month a government lawyer apologized, saying the error was caused by an officer who did not notice the court order.
The student is still with her grandparents in Honduras and hopes to return soon.
