Students Help Earth and Get a Prom Boost
Idaho, Lake City, USAThu Apr 30 2026
Lake City High School students set up a week‑long Earth celebration in the school hallway.
The event ran while exams and student government elections were happening, giving everyone a break from studying.
A committee led by senior Asa Sutton ran the booths.
She sold zinnia flowers in compostable pots for one dollar each.
The money went straight to the student council and will help pay for next year’s prom.
At one table, Asa talked about her Outdoors Studies Program.
She said a single trip to Corbin Park changed her plans after she saw insects and tested water.
Now she wants more students to learn about ecology.
The committee also shared information from a local nonprofit that protects Tubbs Hill.
They handed out stickers, books and pamphlets to explain why the park matters.
The week ended with a trail cleanup at Couger Bay.
Students from Lake City and Coeur d’Alene cut fallen trees and cleared brush.
The Idaho Trails Association praised the effort, noting that many students had never done a cleanup before.
Barbara Sammut of the association said the project helped kids think about how they can protect nature.
She hopes to keep expanding youth projects for teens in the future.
