A recent study in Columbia Public Schools has revealed that many students are concerned about fairness. The survey found that while 65% of students believe bullying is not accepted, they feel the rules are not applied evenly. This issue also came up when students were asked about discipline.
Only half of the students, 53%, think the school's rules are fair. They want the rules to be enforced in a more consistent way. Additionally, 63% of students feel their school environment is mostly supportive, but they wish it was more inclusive and fair.
The survey also showed that 86% of students believe they have opportunities to succeed. Moreover, 66% said they receive help when they are struggling. However, staff satisfaction has decreased in some areas. For instance, the percentage of staff who say the district creates a positive learning environment dropped from 78% to 74%. Similarly, the number of staff who say students are well-behaved fell from 54% to 51%.
The Columbia Board of Education reviewed these survey results during a meeting. The findings highlight the need for schools to address fairness and consistency in their policies.
