Early Sunday morning, tragedy struck the New York City subway. A man, believed to be in his late 20s, approached a woman on a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station and set her on fire. This horrific act was witnessed by police officers patrolling the area, who quickly extinguished the flames but couldn't save the victim. The NYPD is treating this as a homicide and searching for the suspect, described as around 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 pounds, last seen wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans, and a red-banded dark hat. The victim's identity is not yet known. No one else was harmed.
Governor Kathy Hochul is responding to concerns about subway safety, especially after such disturbing incidents. She's deploying 250 National Guard members and ensuring all subway cars have security cameras. Though crime has dropped since January 2021, the recent violent episodes have still made many feel unsafe. On Saturday night, the city was under a "Code Blue" alert, providing extra resources during cold weather.
