Summerville explores a new plan to mix drinks with downtown walks
Summerville, South Carolina, USAFri Jun 05 2026
Summerville’s leaders want to turn part of the historic downtown into a spot where adults 21 and older can carry open alcoholic drinks outdoors. The idea is to help local shops and cafés by giving visitors more reasons to wander the sidewalks. Similar zones exist in other cities, and the town hopes to copy their success—more visitors, more sales, and maybe even new festivals.
Not every business has to join, and those that do will use special cups with lids. Bright signs will mark where people can go with their beverages, and time limits will keep the party from running too late. Mayor Russ Touchberry argues the plan won’t turn the town upside down; instead, it could open doors for smaller stores that rarely see tourists.
Some residents worry about rowdiness, but others point out that trouble makers will probably cause problems whether drinks are allowed outside or not. Supporters say the district will simply give families and friends another way to enjoy the area without forcing everyone into bars.
A local hospitality team already keeps an eye on the streets, and they’ll continue patrolling the new zone. The town council will vote soon on whether to green-light the project in the historic district.
