Supernova Airlines, a Ukrainian airline, has been granted permission to operate within European Union airspace. This authorization came from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). However, commercial flights in Ukraine's airspace remain closed due to ongoing conflicts. Timur Tkachenko, a Ukrainian deputy minister, clarified that despite the EU permit, the skies over Ukraine are still shut to regular flights.
The airline, backed by the courier company Nova Poshta, can now launch international cargo flights. By November 1st, seven weekly flights between Kyiv and Prague, and Lviv and Prague, will be up and running. These flights, though, will only take off once Ukraine reopens its airspace to commercial traffic. Authorities predict this might happen in early 2025, but this is a best-case scenario.
Supernova also acquired a Part-TCO certificate, which allows them to run charter flights within the EU. This certificate was granted on October 17th and the airline is preparing to start commercial cargo flights in European airspace. They also plan to operate cargo flights for other companies using their Boeing 737-800SF freighter, previously used by Air Berlin.
In addition, the airline has ambitions to launch long-haul flights between Ukraine, the US, and China. The specific routes they're considering remain undisclosed. Strategically, Supernova aims to connect Europe with both the US and China.
When civilian flights resume in Ukraine, Lviv Airport might be the first to reopen, with Boryspil Airport also being a potential candidate. However, safety improvements are essential before these airports can resume operations.
