Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Under Fire for Luxury Trips and Gifts

Washington, USASat Dec 21 2024
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is facing new scrutiny. A report by Democratic senators reveals he took more luxury trips and received gifts from wealthy supporters in 2021, but didn't report them. These trips include a private jet flight to the Adirondacks and a yacht trip to New York City, all paid for by billionaire Harlan Crow. The court just recently got an ethics code, but it's up to each justice to follow it. Republicans aren't likely to push for changes, though. They think the investigation is just a way to attack the conservative court. Thomas says he didn't need to report these trips because Crow is a close friend and the rules weren't clear before. The report also talks about other justices. They mention late Justice Antonin Scalia taking many trips without reporting them. Justice Samuel Alito took a luxury trip to Alaska in 2008 and didn't report it, saying old rules let him do that. Justice Thomas's wife, Ginni, supported Trump's efforts to change the 2020 election results. But Thomas didn't step aside from cases involving Trump. Similarly, Alito didn't step aside from cases involving the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, even though Trump flags were seen at his homes. The report wants Congress to look into this more. Some justices, like Elena Kagan, think we need a way to enforce the ethics code. But it could be tough to do that legally.
