Sweden Seeks China's Help After Mysterious Cable Cuts

Baltic Sea, Harpsund, SwedenFri Nov 29 2024
Recently, Sweden has formally requested China's help to explain the sudden damage to two important data cables in the Baltic Sea. These cables, one connecting Finland to Germany and another from Lithuania to Sweden, were both damaged in Swedish waters. The incident happened near a Chinese ship called the Yi Peng 3. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said Sweden wants the vessel to move to their waters for inspection. He added that they have sent a formal request to China for cooperation in understanding what happened. This request was made after a meeting of Baltic sea region government leaders. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk showed support for Sweden's actions, trusting them to act in the best interests of all Baltic countries. Finland, Sweden, and German authorities are all investigating the cable cuts. Germany’s defense minister hinted that sabotage might be involved, but no evidence has been found yet. Chinese authorities previously stated they didn’t have information about the ship but were ready to communicate with relevant parties. They also emphasized the importance of protecting the vessel’s navigation rights. Last year, Sweden reported another cable running to Estonia was deliberately damaged.
