Actress Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in "Euphoria," faced a double whammy on July 2. Her Verizon phone number was hijacked, and her X (formerly Twitter) account was targeted by crypto scammers. Tech site 404 Media reported that her phone number was compromised, and a receipt showing a payment order was posted online. The same day, her X account, which has over a million followers, was used to promote a cryptocurrency called "Sweeney. " The scam attracted around $10 million in trading volume.
Sweeney's account sent out tweets encouraging followers to invest in the crypto, with promises of giveaways and live promotions. This isn't the first time celebrities have fallen victim to crypto scams. Earlier in March, Sweeney also dealt with social media drama when users searched for lewd photos of her, leading to spam and possible malware. The incident highlights the struggles of platforms like X with moderation issues under new ownership.
