Tai Chi Boosts Body Awareness to Cut Depression in Women 40-55

Clinical research setting, women aged 40-55Sat Sep 19 2026

Researchers looked at how Tai Chi affects depression in women aged 40 to 55. They recruited 40 women with clinical depression. Half did Tai Chi for eight weeks. The other half kept their normal routine. The study used standard questionnaires to track symptoms.

They checked depression, anxiety, and body awareness at the start and five more times. Body awareness means noticing internal signals like heartbeat or breath. The Tai Chi group saw better body awareness as early as week two. Depression scores dropped starting at week four. Anxiety scores fell later in the program.

Improvements in body awareness explained about a quarter to a third of the depression relief. Anxiety also went down later but wasn't linked to body awareness. This suggests feeling your body more helps lift mood. The effect was specific to depression.

The study supports the idea that depression involves the body, not just the mind. Tai Chi may work by tuning people into their physical sensations. Future studies could test if other mind-body practices have similar effects. More research could explore this path further.
