Taiwan, known for its low crime rates, faced an unusual incident last Friday. A single attacker caused chaos in Taipei's busy shopping area. Four people lost their lives, including the attacker himself. The man, identified as Chang Wen, was 27 years old and came from Taoyuan. He died after falling from a building while running from the police. Police confirmed that Chang acted alone. They have not found any evidence of accomplices. The motive behind his actions remains unclear. Investigations are still ongoing. Premier Cho Jung-tai revealed that Chang had an arrest warrant. He was wanted for dodging Taiwan's mandatory military service.
The attack began at Taipei's main train station. Chang set off smoke bombs and then moved to a nearby mall. He attacked people both inside the mall and on his way there. In total, eleven people were injured. Two of them are in critical condition in the hospital. In response to this rare violent act, police have increased their presence across Taiwan. Taipei's mayor, Chiang Wan-an, announced enhanced security measures. This includes more officers and better equipment in crowded areas. President Lai Ching-te visited the injured in the hospital. He promised to improve emergency response times to ensure public safety.
